  • Experiment
Linkage analysis was performed on 16 LGXSM (LG=LG/J; SM=SM/J) recombinant inbred (RI) lines to identify QTLs associated with obesity and diabetes traits. Parental strain LG/J exhibits a larger body size compared to parental strain SM/J and these two strains also differ in obesity and diabetes related traits in response to dietary fat. 506 microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 2 to 3 cM were used in the genome scan. 39 loci were mapped but only those reaching genomewide significance are reportedhere.

On mouse Chromosome 5, an interval between D5Mit47 (1 cM) and D5Mit353 (24 cM) shows linkage to kidney weight on a high fat diet. This locus is named Kdnw1 (kidney weight 1). SM/J-derived alleles confer increased kidney weight at this locus.
