487 animals from a heterogeneous stock designated UM-HET3 were analyzed for bone (femur) geometry traits. UM-HET3 is derived from a cross between (BALB/cJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x (C3H/HeJ x DBA/2J)F1. 99 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 15 cM - 20 cM were used in the genome scan. Nine geometric traits were evaluated for each femur.

Linkage to cross sectional area (CSA), maximum outer fiber length (MaxOFL), average outer fiber length (AveOFL), medial/lateral axis bending moment of inertia (Iml), andanterior/posterior bending moment of inertia (Iap) map to 21 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 near D15Mit100. This locus is designated Fmgty12. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles confer increased CSA, MaxOFL, AveOFL, Iml, and Iap compared to DBA/2J-derived alleles.

Linkage to minimum outer fiber length (MinOFL), average outer fiber length (AveOFL), and medial/lateral axis bending moment of inertia (Iml) map to 54.5 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 near D15Mit171. This locus is designated Fmgty13. BALB/cJ-derived alleles conferincreased MinOFL, AveOFL, and Iml compared to C57BL/6J-derived alleles.
