Notes
  • Experiment
487 animals from a heterogeneous stock designated UM-HET3 were analyzed for bone (femur) geometry traits. UM-HET3 is derived from a cross between (BALB/cJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x (C3H/HeJ x DBA/2J)F1. 99 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 15 cM - 20 cM were used in the genome scan. Nine geometric traits were evaluated for each femur.

Linkage to cortical thickness, minimum outer fiber length (MinOFL), average outer fiber length (AveOFL), shape factor (SF), and medial/lateral axis bending moment of inertia (Iml) map to 16 cM on mouse Chromosome 11 near D11Mit83. This locus is designated Fmgty9. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased SF, Iml, AveOFL, and MinOFL compared to BALB/cJ-derived alleles. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles confer increased cortical thickness compared to DBA/2J-derived alleles.
