    A QTL associated to body mass was mapped to approximately 15 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 using 334 animals from an F2 intercross between 2 phenotypically selected strains orignally derived from JU, CBA, and CFLP. The high line (PH) was selected for high body mass and the low line (PL) was selected for low body mass. The high line was selected for 52 generations but an inbred line was not established. The low line was established as an inbred line.

    This locus is named Bdmsq (body mass QTL) and shows maximallinkage to body mass at 6- and 10-weeks of age. The 95% confidence interval of Bdmsq is between D6Mit268 (15.6 cM) and D6Mit123 (29 cM). Animals homozygous for the high line allele exhibit increased body mass. Bdmsq was confirmed by creating reciprocal congenic strains where almost all of mouse Chromosome 6 was introgressed from donor strain PH onto background strain PL (called the HinL line), and vice versa (called the LinH line). Body mass at 10-weeks of age showed significant linkage to mouse Chromosome 6 in both reciprocal congenic populations.
