Notes

Absence of third molars in mice was associated with D3Mit141 in EL mice. Absence of third molars occurs at an incidence of 97% in EL mice. Informative crosses involved MSM and EL mice. 15 (EL/Seac x MSM/Msf)F2 animals with missing M3 molars were genotypedfor 59 polymorphic markers across the genome. The region of highest association was found between D3Mit216 and D3Mit17. Genotyping chromosome 3 markers in 7 (El/Seac x MSM/Msf)F1 x El/Seac backcross mice with missing M3 and 15 (EL/Seac x MSM)F2 control mice with normal dentation supported this finding. Homozygosity for EL/Seac-derived alleles confer increased incidence of missing M3 molars. Potential candidate genes found in this region are Notch 2, Ngfb, Pitx2, Lef1, and Egf.

Suggestive association tomissing M3 molars was also detected at 32 cM on mouse Chromosome 16 near D16Mit126 (x2=0.05).
