Congenic strain B10.UW-H3b we Pax1un at/SnJ (abbreviated B10.UW) carries a UW/Le derived portion of chromosome 2 on a C57BL/10SnJ genetic background. B10.UW exhibits decreased body length and adiposity index and less body fat percentage compared tobackground strain C57BL/10SnJ so authors set out to map the gene(s) on chromosome 2 responsible for the phenotypic differences. 63 microsatellite markers spanning mouse Chromosome 2 at an average spacing of 1.8 cM were screened in 228 male and female progeny from a (B10.UW x C57BL/10SnJ)F2 intercross.

Fine mapping of the congenic region estimates the UW/Le-derived donor region of mouse Chromosome 2 to span approximately 55.7 cM - 90 cM between D2Mit103 to D2Mit27.

A subcongenic line displaying the samephenotype as the original B10.UW congenic was created that retained the UW/Le-derived donor region from approximately 55 cM (D2Mit420) - 72.1 cM (D2Mit450) on chromosome 2.

Linkage to adiposity index (AI) and body length (anal-to-nasal length) mapped to the distal portion of the congenic region near Pax1 (82 cM on chr 2) with LOD=5 for AI and LOD=19.2 for anal-to-nasal length. This locus is named Aibl (adiposity index and body length.) C57BL/10SnJ-derived alleles appear to confer dominantly inherited increase in body length compared to UW/Le-derived alleles at this locus.

The Aibl interval contains about 160 genes. Some possible candidate genes for body length are Pcsk2 (81.4 cM), Acss1, and Sstr4 (84 cM). Authors place the most likely position of the gene responsible for body length between D2Mit492 (67.8 cM) and Pax1 (82 cm) although Pax1 itself is not a candidate gene. The Aibl region is syntenic to a portion of human Chromosome 20.
