428 mice from a (ICR-cir/cir x C57BL/6J)F1 x ICR-cir/cir backcross population were typed for 114 microsatellite markers. The cir mutation mapped to 61 cM on mouse Chromosome 9 between D9Mit116 and D9Mit38. The order of markers near cir are as follows:

    cent - D9Mit182 - D9Mit51/D9Mit79/D9Mit310 - D9Mit212/D9Mit184 - D9Mit116/D9Mit15 - cir - D9Mit38 - D9Mit20 - D9Mit243 - D9Mit16 - D9Mit55/D9Mit125 - D9Mit281 - tel

A YAC chromosome walk was performed using D9Mit116/D9Mit15 and D9Mit38 as starting points.Sequences from the right end of YAC 457G1 showed sequence similarity to Ltf and Mtap4. The position of Ltf was determined to be at 60 cM on chromosome 9. The order of genes near the cir critical region was determined to be cent - Mtap4 - Myl13 - Ltf - tel. This region corresponds to human Chromosome 3p21 and the order of the genes is conserved. Candidate genes for cir include Mtap4, Camkl, Zic1, Zic, Lamb2, and Myl3.
