Previous studies identified a QTL on central mouse Chromosome 1 associated with conditioned fear response (Wehner et al. 1997; Caldarone et al. 1997). In this study, Boulder and Northport heterogeneous stock (HS) animals were genotyped for markers on chromosome 1 to analyze this region in detail. Parental strain Boulder HS is composed of C57BL/6, BALB/c, RIII, AKR, DBA/2, I, A/J, and C3H and has been bred for more than 60 generations. Parental strain Northport HS has been bred for more than 40 generations and is composed of A/J, AKR/J, BALB/cJ, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, CBA/J, DBA/2J, and LP/J. Peak linkage for contextual fear conditioning, Cfcd, mapped between D1Mit370 (88.3 cM) and D1Mit36 (92.3 cM) with LOD=5.5 in the Boulder HS. Linkage to open field activitywas also examined and did not map to the same location. Open field activity, Opfa, mapped to 81.6 cM at D1Mit266, with LOD=5.4 in the Northport HS and LOD=3.3 in the Boulder HS.
