Linkage analysis was performed on the highest and lowest antibody titer animals from an (HIII x LIII)F2 cross to identify QTLs associated with susceptibility to infection by Salmonella typhimurium. The animals were intraperitonally injected with S.typhi antigens and measured for antibody titers. HIII is a high antibody responder strain whereas LIII is a low antibody responder strain. Four loci were identified with significant linkage to susceptibility to Salmonella infection. Ssta1 and Ssta2 mapped to mouse Chromosome 1 at 34.8 cM (D1Mit303) and 95.8 cM (D1Mit356), respectively. Ssta1 is linked to anti-flagellar antibody production and Ssta2 is linked to both anti-flagellar antibody production and autosomal antigen activity. Ssta3 maps to 35 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 in linkage to D6Mit128 and D6Mit6. Ssta3 is associated with anti-flagellar antibody production. Ssta4 maps to 37 cM on mouse Chromosome 11 at D11Mit5 and is also associated with anti-flagellar antibody production.
