Ritls, a locus associated with radiation induced thymic lymphoma susceptibility was mapped to an interval on mouse chromosome 16 spanning 9.61 cM-10.3 cM using a (Ccs-7/Dem x BALB/c)F1 x BALB/c backcross. Recombinant congenic strain Ccs-7/Dem derives 12.5% of its genome from inbred strain STS/A on a BALB/c background and is resistant to radiation induced lymphogenesis. Parental inbred strain BALB/c is susceptible to radiation induced lymphogenesis whereas parental inbred strain STS/A is resistant. Female backcross animals 4-5 weeks of age were exposed to X-irradiation and observed for lymphomagenesis. D16Mit34, a marker at centromeric mouse chromosome 16 is associated with susceptibility to thymic lymphomas in animals homozygous for STS/A- or BALB/c-derived alleles (90% and 91% incidence of thymic lymphoma, respectively). Animals heterozygous at D16Mit34 appear to be more resistant (69% incidence of thymic lymphoma).
