13 CXB RI strains were used in mapping QTLs affecting rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) and slow-wave sleep (SWS). 233 loci were screened in 214 adult male mice using sleeping pattern data recorded over a period of 2 days. The C57BL/6J parental strain spends more time in REM sleep (49.3 1.3) and slow-wave sleep (7.4 0.4) during the light phase compared to BALB/cByJ (REMS=45.0 1.6; SWS = 4.9 0.4), with the C57BL/6J phenotype appearing to be dominant. CXB RI strains have a SWS distribution pattern intermediate of the two parental strains, and a trimodal REMS distribution pattern corresponding to the 2 parental modes and intermediate mode. 6 suggestive QTLs were mapped in this study. Remslp1 (linked to D4Mit288, Mup1, and D4Mit14 on Chromosome 4 at 28 cM),Remslp2 (linked to Tcp1 on Chromosome 16 at 7.5 cM), and Remslp3 (linked to D16Mit47 on Chromosome 16 at 43 cM) are loci associated with 24-hour REMS and dark phase REMS. Remslp4 (linked to Tcp1 and D17Mit47 on Chromosome 17 at 10 cM) and Remslp5 (linked toGlo2 on Chromosome 17 at 11cM) are loci associated with 24-hr REMS and light phase REMS.
