Linkage analysis was performed with 167 (C57BL/6J x A/J) x A/J backcross mice using 232 markers to identify loci affecting hormone-induced ovulation rate (HIOR) in female mice. The C57BL/6J strain releases 6-8 times more eggs (40-54 eggs in cumulus) thanA/J (8-9 eggs in cumulus) in response to exogenous gonadotropins. The higher response in C57BL/6J is associated with higher ovarian aromatase activity and estrogen production in this strain. Mapping confirmed 4 previously mapped QTLs, Oriq1, Oriq2, Oriq3,and Oriq4, on mouse chromosomes 9, 2, 6, and X, respectively. A new QTL, Oriq5 (LOD = 3.94), was identified on proximal chromosome 10 in linkage with D10Nds1, Mpmv12, and D10Mit31 spanning 6 cM - 36 cM. A possible candidate gene for Oriq5 is estrogen receptor alpha, Esr1.
