The authors investigated the inheritance of adiposity and related traits in the obese, diabetes-prone KK/H1Lt (KK) and the lean, normoglycemic C57BL/6J (B6) strains, their F1 hybrids, and a large intercross generation. Adiposity index (A1) was defined as the sum of four fat depot weights divided by body weight. A male-specific QTL affecting A1 was found between DXMit166 and DXMit25 on the X Chromosome. The lod score peak attained the value of 3.77 8 cM distal to DXMit166. This locus was designated as Obq6 and accounted for 11.7% of the phenotypic variance of A1 in males. Obq6 had a signifiant effect on gonadal fat % (lod = 4.1), inguinal fat % (lod = 2.8) and retroperitoneal fat % (lod = 3.6). There was no association between mesenteric fat and Obq6. A modified A1 was calculated excluding mesenteric fat % and this analysis revealed a lod peak score of 5.0 at 6 cM distal to DXMit166 and accounted for 15.7% of the phenotypic variability in males.
