Lymphocytes of mouse strains BALB/cHeA and STS/A differ in their response to the CD3 antibody. BALB/c lymphocytes are intermediate reponders while STS lymphocytes do not respond to this stimulus. The authors used recombinant congenic strains of the BALB/c - c-STS/Dem (CcS/Dem) series to examine the genetic basis of proliferative response to anti-CD3. The authors observed proliferation in complete RPMI medium without anti-CD3. This was controlled by the locus Sporl1 (spontaneous proliferation) which mapped to markers D4Mit23 and D4Mit7 (corrected P = 0.0046 and 0.0598 respectively). STS allele controls higher response. This response does not depend upon age or gender. Putative candidate genes in this region include Tlr4, Tal2, Lapls3-22 and Lapls1-10.
