Rbmy encodes the Hnrpg protein in mouse. Mouse primers from Rbmy sequences amplified fragments of 350 bp and 185 bp in mouse genomic DNA. The 350bp fragment was found to contain an intron of Hnrpg and a fragment of that same size was amplified in mouse clone 8 which contained only the mouse X Chromosome. However, the 185bp fragment was intronless and did not amplify in X. Moreover, a BAC clone containing the 350bp fragment containing the intron sequence also showed hybridization to region XA3-XA5 of the mouse X Chromosome. The authors suggested that the X Chromosome gene is the structural aand named the gene Rbmx. The 185 fragment is therefore considered a retroposon derived from Rbmx and was found to map with mouse Chromosome 14. The retroposon was named Rbmxrt.
