Image
Caption A: Transmission electron microscopy of the corpus callosum reveals thick abundant myelin sheaths (arrows) present in wild type brain. B: These thick sheaths are completely absent in the brain of the Qkie5/Qkie5 mouse, which contain only the occasional thinly myelinated axon (arrow). C: The less severe Qkiqk-v/Qkiqk-v brain is shown for comparison. Magnification x10,500. Coronal sections stained with Lucon Fast Blue staining for myelin lipids shows that the intense blue staining of the corpus callosum in wild type mice is absent in Qkie5/Qkie5 and Qkiqk-v/Qkiqk-v mice (inset boxes). Immunohistochemistry using anti-Calbindin antibody reveals cerebellum axonal swellings in the granular cells layer of 3 month old Qkie5/Qkie5 mice (E) but not wild type (D). Higher magnification images of the boxed areas in (D) and (E) are shown in (F) and (G) respectively.
