Caption Magi2tm1Key/Magi2tm1Key (delta/delta) mice show early podocyte injury. (A) Representative overview of ultrastructural changes in glomeruli of wild-type (+/+) vs. mutant mice at 4 weeks of age. Whereas wild-type animals show no apparent ultrastructural changes of podocytes (marked as P), mesangial cells (marked as M) and endothelium (marked as E), mutant mice show diffuse podocyte injury, characterized by microvillous transformation and global foot process effacement. In addition, several podocytes show features of hypertrophy (asterisk), characterized by formation of long and thin cell projections, attached to glomerular capillaries (marked as C). (Scale bars: 2 um.) (B) Magnification of foot process changes. Whereas wild-type mice show intact podocyte foot processes and intervening slit diaphragms lining the glomerular basement membrane, mutant mice show diffuse foot process effacement with the characteristic basal actin condensation. (Scale bars: 1 um.)
