Histological kidney analysis in Gne^tm1.1Masn/Gne^tm1.1Masn (mt) and Gne^tm1.1Masn/Gne⁺ (ht) mice. (A) PAS-stained kidney sections at 8 days, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months of age in heterozygous (ht) (upper panels) and homozygous (mt) (lower panels) mice. Glomeruli were enlarged in the homozygotes compared to heterozygotes (first panel from the left). Glomerular lesions with mesangial matrix deposits, including glomerulosclerosis and enlarged Bowman's spaces as well as urinary tubule dilatations with cast, were observed at 3 months of age in homozygotes (second panel from the left). At 6 and 12 months of age these glomerular lesions had progressed and some mutants exhibited renal failure with severe glomerulosclerosis (third and fourth panels from the left). Scale bars: 20 mm.
