Caption Phalloidin staining of E18.5 organ of Corti from Ptk7chz/Ptk7+ (chz/+) (A, C) and Ptk7chz/Ptk7chz (chz/chz) mice (B, D), with images from the basal (A, B) or apical (C, D) region of the cochlea. Heterozygous mice show an uniformly polarized orientation of stereociliary bundles in the basal region (A), evident on all three rows of outer hair cells (OHC) and the one row of inner hair cells (IHC). Disruption of bundle orientation was most pronounced in OHC3 of the basal cochlea of mutants (B), with an apparent randomization of bundle orientation; arrowheads indicate misoriented bundles. In apical regions, heterozygous mice demonstrate three rows of OHC and one row of IHC (C). In contrast, hair cell arrangement is disrupted in mutants (D) with a broadened domain of OHC and four apparent rows of cells as well as extra IHC (asterisks).
