Caption Myocardial lesions appeared in Cxadrtm1Rwf/Cxadrtm1Rwf embryos ~10.8 dpc. These are hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of hearts from 10.8-11 dpc embryos at 100x magnification. a: Heart of a typical Cxadrtm1Rwf/Cxard+ (+/-) embryo. No abnormalities are apparent. b-d: Hearts from three representative Cxadrtm1Rwf/Cxadrtm1Rwf (-/-) embryos. Each of these exhibited myocardial lesions (green squares). Lesions were characterized by dark red, eosinophilic cells with condensed nuclei in the center of the myocardium and swollen, anuclear cells at the periphery. The location of the cardiac lesions was variable. Embryo (b) had lesions on the dorsal sides of the atrium and ventricle. Embryo (c) had lesions on the dorsal and ventral sides of the ventricle. The nucleated fetal erythrocytes present in the pericardial space suggested that blood was escaping the heart. Embryo (d) showed more extensive lesions throughout the myocardium and disruption of the ventricle wall.
