Morphological abnormalities and fragility of Loricrin^tm1Der/Loricrin^tm1Der epidermal cornified cell envelope. Wild-type (WT) and Loricrin^tm1Der/Loricrin^tm1Der (MT) cornified cell envelope (CE) were isolated and treated with ultrasound for 5,10,15,20 and 25 minutes respectively. Note that untreated mutant CE are of irregular shape. Wild-type CE appear to be more symmetrical and have a smooth surface. After 15 min of treatment, mutant CE were completely destroyed, whereas wild-type CE were largely intact.
