Caption Predentin (pd), the newly formed nonmineralized matrix, matures into a mineralized dentin (d) during development. Representative hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of molars (A, 1 month, lower first molar; B, 12 months, upper first molar) and incisors (C, 3 months) show an extended predentin (red layer in newly formed matrix; light pink layer in adult mice) and a reduced dentin in Dmp1tm1Mis/Dmp1tm1Mis (KO) mice compared with the wild type (WT) mice, suggesting that Dmp1 is required for maturation of predentin into dentin. Note that the enamel layer is thinner in the muant mice, indicating that Dmp1 may play a role in normal amelogenesis (C). Am, ameloblasts; Od, odontoblasts; e, enamel.
