Caption Scanning electron micrographs taken from wild type (+/+) and Myo7aHdb/Myo7a+ (Hdb/+) utricles at P20 (A, C) and 5 months (B, D). At P20, heterozygous mutant utricle hair cell stereocilia were very long and thin and lacked the regular height gradation seen in the controls. Type I and type II hair cells were therefore difficult to distinguish as defined in the control example (A). Type I vestibular hair cells have a staircase array of stereocilia with a kinocilium of equal length to the tallest stereocilia. Type II hair cells, by contrast, have a longer kinocilium extending above the tallest stereocilia (+/+, A, B). By 5 months, the rigidity in the stereocilia bundles seen at P20 was absent and the stereocilia bundles were splayed and lay against the utricular surface (D). Scale bar 10um.
