Scanning electron micrographs taken from P1 wild type (+/+, A, B) and Myo7a^Hdb/Myo7a⁺ mice (Hdb/+, C, D). In the apical turn, stereocilia bundles of both inner hair cells (IHC) and outer hair cells (OHC) cover the whole apical hair cell surface and have not formed a polarized staircase array (C) as observed in wild type (A). In the basal turn OHC stereocilia bundles do form a V-shaped staircase but with additional inward pointing wings making them appear more U-shaped (D) and the IHC stereocilia are disorganized (D). Basal IHC stereocilia bundles (D) extend from the whole apical surface of the hair cell compared with the wiild type (B). Scale bar: 10um
