Caption In the Sox9tm1CrmSox9+ (B & D) all precartilaginous skeletal elements using Alcian blue staining exhibit a reduced staining intensity and are smaller then the +/+ controls (A & C). The cartilage primordia of scapula consists of two small pieces instead of a single intact element. Hematoxylin/eosin staining of transverse sections through thoracic regions (E & F) indicate cells in the sclerotome surrounding the notchcord (arrowhead) appears like mesenchymal cells in the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (F) but are typical cobblestone-like prechondrocytic cells in the +/+ control (E). Abbreviations: scapula (S); humerus (H); radius (R); ulna (U); femur (F); fibula (Fi); tibia (T) prevertebrae (PV).
