Caption Skeletal preparation of +/+ (A, C, E & G) and Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (A, C, E & H). All endochondral skeletal elements of the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ are smaller and thinner then the +/+ littermates (A-F). The arrowhead in H shows that the bending site of the ulna is outside the ossification center. Cartilage staining of the +/+ ( I & K) and Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ indicates Meckel's cartilage is interurupted (arrow) as well as bowing (arrowhead). In the E15.5 sternum section of the Sox9tm1Crm/Sox9+ (N), the cartilage primordia is malformed (arrows). Abbreviations: Meckel's cartilage (Me); scapula (S); spine of scapula (Sp); humerus (H); radius (R); ulna (U); femur (F); fibula (Fi); tibia (T).
