Caption Retinal degeneration in Agtpbp1pcd-5J/Agtpbp1pcd-5J mice. (A) Retinal section from 6.5 month old wild type DBA/2J displays normal cyto-architecture. The outer nuclear layer (ONL) contains 10-12 rows of photoreceptor nucleii, and the outer segments (OS) stain deeply and uniformly. (B) Retinal section from a 5.5 month old homozygous mutant mouse displays signs of photoreceptor degeneration. The ONL is 8-10 nucleii across and the OS appears significantly thinner than wild type. (C) Retinal section from a homozygous mutant mouse at 6.5 months shows clear signs of degeneration. Photoreceptor cell loss is prominent as the ONL has narrowed to 6-8 rows across and both the OS and IS are substantially thinned. IS = inner segments; OPL = outer plexiform layer; INL = inner nuclear layer; IPL = inner plexiform layer; GCL = glaglion cell layer.
