(A). The presomitic mesoderm (psm) and the rostral neural plate (np). B is a transverse section through the neural plate with the plane of section shown in lower case (A). At 9 dpc (C) expression in the rostral neural tube (nt) is present in dorsal neural progenitors (D). Expression in the head (C and E) is detectible in the hindbrain (hb), the midbrain (mb) and the optic stalk (os). Expression in the presomitic mesoderm (psm) (F) is present in a stripe at the boundary with the most recently formed somite (arrowhead) with further expression in the most recently formed somites. The approximate plane of section of D, E, and F is shown in lower case (C). An interference contrast image of the tail of the embryo in C (G) shows expression at the presomitic mesoderm (psm)/somite boundary (arrowhead). An alternate view of the tail of the embryo in C shows expression in the presomitic mesoderm and most recently formed somites either side of the neural tube (H). Expression persisted at 10 dpc (I) in the rostral neural tube (nt) and at the presomitic mesoderm/somite boundary (arrowhead). At 11 dpc (J) further expression became evident in the neural tube (nt) with expression in the rostral neural tube reducing in dorsal neural progenitors and initiating in centrally located lateral cells (K). Caudal expression localizes to a group of cells within the motor horn (L). The approximate plane of sections K and L is shown in lower case (J). Stripes of expression at the presomitic mesoderm (psm)/somite boundary (arrowhead) are present in the tail at 11 dpc (N) with further expression in the hindgut diverticulum (M).
