Pictured left to right: A/a and A^y/- and a^e/a^e. Agouti (A) mice are yellowish gray, slightly lighter on the belly than on the back. a (nonagouti) is recessive to A. In A^y heterozygotes, all the hair pigment is yellow, but eyes are black. Homozygotes for a^e are very dark all over with no yellow hairs in the ears or around the nipples and perineum.
