(A-E) The anterior limit of expression in the midline is marked by an arrow; the position of the node is indicated by an arrowhead; the asterisk indicates where expression is slightly expanded anteriorly in the mutant. (F) The brackets indicate regions of Hesx1 expression; the arrow indicates the anterior limit of Gbx2 expression. The apparently stronger staining in the mutant embryo is due to a prolonged color reaction in the mutant compared to the wild-type in order to visualize the staining. (B,F) Dorsal views of flat-mounted embryos.
