Glossary Term Centromere
Definition In mammalian genetics, the primary constriction of a chromosome separating it into the short arm (p) and the long arm (q). The centromere is the chromosomal region over which the kinetochore is organized. See the Figure at Wikipedia. Mouse chromosomes have centromeres close to one end and have essentially no short arm. See the idiogram of the mouse karyotype at the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington.
