At postnatal week 4, lacZ staining was still found in the region of the olfactory epithelium that covers the complex turbinate structures in the posterior nasal cavity. A large part of the chemosensory surface was stained, extending along the anterior-posterior axis of the nose. Only the dorsal part close to the cribriform plate contained expressing cells, whereas the more ventral domain was devoid of staining.

LacZ-stained cells were retricted to particular areas; activity was found only along the dorsal part of the septum extending into the dorsal recess and the tip of turbinates. Expressing cells were located in the dorsal zone of the epithelium.

Beta-galactosidase-expressing cells were dispersed throughout the chemosensory epithelium; however, they appeared to be distributed non-homogeneously. Closer examination of their position in the epithelium indicated that they were located in the apical half, whereas the basal half had almost no labelled cells.
