Specimen 4B: embryonic day 12.5; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS20: olfactory epithelium Present 4B

Specimen 4C: postnatal week 4; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: olfactory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 4C At postnatal week 4, lacZ staining was still found in the region of the olfactory epithelium that covers the complex turbinate structures in the posterior nasal cavity. A large part of the chemosensory surface was stained, extending along the anterior-posterior axis of the nose. Only the dorsal part close to the cribriform plate contained expressing cells, whereas the more ventral domain was devoid of staining.
TS28: main olfactory bulb Absent 4C
TS28: nasal cavity respiratory epithelium Absent 4C

Specimen 4E: postnatal week 4; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: olfactory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 4E , 4F LacZ-stained cells were retricted to particular areas; activity was found only along the dorsal part of the septum extending into the dorsal recess and the tip of turbinates. Expressing cells were located in the dorsal zone of the epithelium.

Specimen 5A: postnatal week 4; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: olfactory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 5A LacZ-positive cells were restricted to the cellular layer of the epithelium.
TS28: olfactory epithelium olfactory epithelial supporting cell Absent 5A Sustentacular cells were not labeled.
TS28: nasal cavity lamina propria Absent 5A

Specimen 5E: postnatal week 10; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: olfactory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 5E Beta-galactosidase activity increased over time. A population of beta-galactosidase-expressing cells persisted throughout life.

Specimen 5F: postnatal month 8; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: olfactory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 5F Beta-galactosidase activity increased over time. A population of beta-galactosidase-expressing cells persisted throughout life.

Specimen 6A: postnatal week 4; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: vomeronasal organ sensory epithelium Present Regionally restricted 6B , 6A Beta-galactosidase-expressing cells were dispersed throughout the chemosensory epithelium; however, they appeared to be distributed non-homogeneously. Closer examination of their position in the epithelium indicated that they were located in the apical half, whereas the basal half had almost no labelled cells.
TS28: vomeronasal organ sensory epithelium vomeronasal sensory neuron Present Regionally restricted 6B , 6A Comparison with labeling on an adjacent section indicated that these beta-galactosidase-expressing cells were specifically co-localized with the V1R-expressing vomeronasal sensory neurons and not those expressing the V2R family.

Specimen not shown: postnatal week 4; Gjb4tm1Kwi/Gjb4+ (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: septal olfactory organ Absent
TS28: vomeronasal organ non-sensory epithelium Absent
