nervous system
• the endogenous olfactory receptor is replaced with the coding sequence for beta 2 adrenergic receptor and the olfactory sensory neurons expressing this receptor form dendritic knobs normally in a similar pattern as those expressing the wild type receptor, in the dorsal main olfactory epithelium, but these respond to isopreoternol, not to acetophenone, and co-staining for OMP and GAP43 indicates that these olfactory sensory neurons are, as a population, somewhat less mature than wild type
• While the axons of the olfactory sensory neurons that express this substituted receptor coalesce normally into the normal number of discrete, homogeneous glomeruli, the size of these glomeruli is approximately half the normal size and the number of olfactory sensory neurons that express this receptor in the dorsal main olfactory epithelium is an average of 1,262, which is fewer than the number that normally express the endogenous receptor in wild type mice

taste/olfaction
• the endogenous olfactory receptor is replaced with the coding sequence for beta 2 adrenergic receptor and the olfactory sensory neurons expressing this receptor form dendritic knobs normally in a similar pattern as those expressing the wild type receptor, in the dorsal main olfactory epithelium, but these respond to isopreoternol, not to acetophenone, and co-staining for OMP and GAP43 indicates that these olfactory sensory neurons are, as a population, somewhat less mature than wild type

craniofacial
