• 8-week-old mice intravenously (i.v.) infected with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1; 17 strain) -- a DNA virus -- exhibit no differences in their survival rate, HSV-1 loads in blood and brain, or HSV-1-induced serum levels of IFNB1 (interferon beta 1, fibroblast), ISG15 (ISG15 ubiquitin-like modifier) and CXCL10 (C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10) relative to HSV-1-infected wild-type controls
• isolated peritoneal macrophages and bone-marrow-derived macrophages infected with HSV-1 show normal induction of Ifnb1 and Isg15 mRNA levels relative to HSV-1-infected wild-type cells
• isolated peritoneal macrophages and bone-marrow-derived macrophages infected with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV, Indiana strain) for 12 h show a significantly lower induction of Ifnb1 and Isg15 mRNA levels than VSV-infected wild-type cells
• mice i.v. infected with VSV show significantly lower serum levels of CXCL10 than VSV-infected wild-type controls
• mice i.v. infected with VSV show significantly lower serum levels of interferon-beta than VSV-infected wild-type controls
• mice i.v. infected with VSV show a significantly higher induction of Tnf mRNA expression in the brain, but not in blood, suggesting that XAF1 is dispensable for Tnf induction during viral infection
• 8-week-old mice infected with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV, Indiana strain) exhibit significantly higher VSV loads in blood and brain along with markedly lower mRNA levels of Ifnb1, Isg15, and Cxcl10 in blood and brain, and lower VSV-induced serum levels of IFNB1, ISG15 and CXCL10 than VSV-infected wild-type controls
• mice intravenously infected with VSV or intranasally infected with influenza A virus (IAV, PR8 strain) show a significantly lower survival rate than similarly infected wild-type controls
