mortality/aging
N
• heterozygous intercrosses generate viable homozygotes; the birth ratio is consistent with Mendelian inheritance
• when exposed to 6 Gy of IR and maintained for up to 35 days, all mice die within 20 days post IR treatment whereas 15-20% of IR-treated wild-type controls survive to day 35

growth/size/body
• at P21, body weight is 10-20% lower than that in wild-type controls

homeostasis/metabolism
• thymus extracts from nontreated mice show a dramatic reduction in PARP1-mediated poly-ADP-ribosylation (PARylation) relative to wild-type controls
• after 3 hours recovery from 6Gy IR treatment, PARylation within thymic tissue is significantly lower than that in similarly treated wild-type controls
• when exposed to 6 Gy of IR and maintained for up to 35 days, all mice die within 20 days post IR treatment whereas 15-20% of IR-treated wild-type controls survive to day 35

cellular
• at 3 hours post ionizing radiation (IR) treatment with 6Gy of X-rays, PARP1 [poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase family, member 1] has undergone complete cleavage in thymic tissue, indicating IR-induced apoptosis
• after 3 hours recovery from 6Gy IR treatment, small intestines show a significantly higher % of cleaved Caspase-3 positive nuclei than similarly treated wild-type intestines
