embryo
• overall, melanoblasts exhibit a lower level of BrdU incorporation in the epidermis (E12.5 to E14.5) and dermis (E13.5) relative to wild-type controls
• however, no differences in apoptosis, cell differentiation or fate are observed
• in the trunk region, melanoblast number is normal at E10.5 but significantly lower than that in wild-type controls at each developmental stage from E11.5 to E15.5; this difference increases with time
• although melanoblast numbers are reduced in both the epidermis and dermis, the reduction is far greater in the epidermis than in the dermis

pigmentation
• at 7 days of age, mice show gray pigmentation in the hair follicle bulbs rather the dark pigmentation seen in wild-type controls
• spectrophotometry revealed that hair melanin content is lower than that in wild-type controls
• however, melanin is distributed uniformly from the root to the apex as in wild-type hairs
• mice exhibit gray ears, similar to their coat pigmentation
• mice exhibit gray tails, similar to their coat pigmentation
• mice exhibit a gray coat, unlike the black coat color of wild-type controls
• transgenic hairs show a lighter pigmentation than wild-type hairs
