behavior/neurological
• during daily limited-access
• when given intermittent 24 hour access to ethanol
• ethanol inhibition of NMDA current is intermediately impaired compared to in wild-type mice and homozygotes
• ethanol-treated mice fail to exhibit an increase in activity at low doses and exhibit less of a reduction in activity at high doses compared with wild-type mice
• ethanol-treated mice exhibit a faster recovery as tested by rotarod performance compared with wild-type mice
• ethanol-treated mice fail to exhibit an increase in time spent in the open arms of an elevated plus maze unlike wild-type mice
• however, ethanol-treated mice exhibit normal impairment of motor coordination, loss of righting reflex, hypothermia and ethanol metabolism
• altered conditioned taste aversion to a low dose of ethanol
• however, response at higher doses is normal
• ethanol-treated mice fail to exhibit an increase in time spent in the open arms of an elevated plus maze unlike wild-type mice
• however, anxiety-related behavior is normal in saline-treated mice

nervous system
• ethanol inhibition of NMDA current is intermediately impaired compared to in wild-type mice and homozygotes
• however, NMDA evoked currents are normal

taste/olfaction
N
• mice exhibit normal saccharin preference
