phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
behavior/neurological
• in an odor discrimination test, 7 and 12 month old males spend less time exploring a new smell than controls; a similar tendency is seen for females but it does not reach significance
• 12 month old females, but not males, perform worse than controls on the rotarod test
• while under normal conditions, mutants exhibit normal locomotor activity, 7 month old females, but not males, administered with amphetamine exhibit less ambulatory movement

nervous system
• aggregated alpha-synuclein is detected in 15 month old mutant brains
• 3 and 12 month old mutants exhibit altered dopamine release and reuptake patterns; the peak amplitude, or amount, of dopamine release induced by depolarization with a fixed amount of locally applied KCl is reduced
• dopamine uptake is reduced at 3 and 12 months of age and release rate is lower at 3 months of age, with a trend for reduction at 12 months of age
• the total dopamine load is reduced at 12 months of age indicating reduced dopamine transmission in the striatum
• however, dopaminergic neuron loss is not seen in 3 or 12 month old mutants

taste/olfaction
• in an odor discrimination test, 7 and 12 month old males spend less time exploring a new smell than controls; a similar tendency is seen for females but it does not reach significance
