• cortical neurons exhibit altered electrical properties compared with wild-type cells

• following calcium removal and addback, cultured cortical neurons exhibit less robust calcium elevation compared with wild-type cells

• input resistance is completely insensitive to reduction of calcium unlike in wild-type neurons

• reduction of calcium failed to enhance membrane excitability unlike in wild-type neurons

• the current required to maintain -75 mV is larger than in wild-type cortical neurons
