homeostasis/metabolism
• at 1 year of age, homozygotes display a significant decrease in skin corticosterone levels relative to wild-type controls, while plasma corticosterone levels are relatively normal
• at 3 months of age, homozygotes display increased plasma corticosterone levels relative to wild-type controls
• however, no significant differences in plasma corticosterone levels are detected at 1 year of age
• expression of Col1A1 is significantly decreased while expression of MMP-13 is significantly increased in homozygous mutant dermal fibroblasts relative to wild-type controls, suggesting decreased collagen production and increased collagen degradation
• at 1 year of age, homozygotes display decreased collagen type 1 (Col1A1 and Col1A2) expression relative to wild-type controls
• however, no significant differences in collagen type 1 expression are detected at 3 months of age

cellular
• in response to a 3-day treatment with a selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibitor (10 uM), cell proliferation is mildly enhanced in wild-type dermal fibroblasts but not in homozygous mutant mouse fibroblasts relative to vehicle-treated controls
• on days 2 and 3, in vitro proliferation of dermal fibroblasts derived from homozygous mutant mice is mildly increased relative to wild-type controls, as shown by an MTS assay

integument
• at 1 year of age, homozygotes show a slight increase in subcutaneous adipose tissue relative to wild-type controls
• however, no significant differences in dermal thickness are noted at 3 months or 1 year of age

adipose tissue
• at 1 year of age, homozygotes show a slight increase in subcutaneous adipose tissue relative to wild-type controls
• however, no significant differences in dermal thickness are noted at 3 months or 1 year of age
