homeostasis/metabolism
• as early as 4 weeks
• in random and fasting samples
• at 9 months of age
• at 9 months of age, mice exhibit increased circulating lipid levels compared with wild-type mice
• however, levels of plasma non-esterified fatty acids are normal
• the respiratory exchange rate of obese mice remains at a fasting level regardless of feeding state unlike in wild-type mice
• prior to the onset of obesity and during chronic obesity, mice exhibit improved glucose clearance and tolerance with increased insulin secretion compared with wild-type mice
• whether fasted or fed, mice produce twice as much heat as wild-type mice

adipose tissue
• obese mice do not exhibit increased macrophage infiltration of adipose tissue unlike in obese wild-type mice fed a high fat diet
• fat deposition is abundant and widespread with skeletal muscles encased in thick layers of fat with adipose deposits throughout unlike in wild-type mice
• the percent of large epididymal and subcutaneous adipocytes is increased compared to in wild-type mice
• however, the number of small adipocytes is normal
• three times heavier
• twice as much as in wild type mice and obese wild-type mice fed a high fat diet

endocrine/exocrine glands
• obese mice exhibit an increase in islet size and number compared with wild-type mice
• however, islet integrity is normal

growth/size/body
• beginning at 2 months of age when fed a regular diet

behavior/neurological
• at 8 weeks of age

liver/biliary system
• in obese mice

immune system
