• after immunization with MOG peptide, there is a greater than 5-fold reduction in the number of Th17 T cells found in the spleen but not in the draining lymph nodes compared to controls
• activating T cells in the presence of IL-23 does not increase the frequency of Th17 T cells as occurs for wild-type T cells
• percentage of memory Th17 T cells is about half that of controls
• the memory Th17 T cells found in these mice fail to proliferate in response to activation in the presence of IL-23
• mice are completely resistant to EAE induced by MOG immunization
• activated T cell blasts from MOG-immunized mutant mice fail to transfer disease to syngenic nave wild-type hosts suggesting resistance to EAE is intrinsic to T cells
