N normal phenotype
mortality/aging
• following infection leading to pneumonia mice exhibit a drop of day 4 survival to 25% compared to 100% in wild-type mice

homeostasis/metabolism
• reduction in C16-C1P ceramides in the retina but increased ceramide levels compared with wild-type mice

immune system
N
• mice exhibit normal macrophages and mast cells
• the number of granulocytes in the spleen and blood is decreased by at least 50% of wild-type
• however, granulocyte numbers within bone marrow are normal
• mice exhibit neutroprenia due to increased priming for apoptosis
• however, migration and adherence of neutrophils is normal
• the number of leukocytes other than neutrophils is increased in the bone marrow and spleen compared to in wild-type mice
• however, organomegaly is not observed
• 3 days after infection mice develop a worsened course of pneumonia compared to wild-type mice resulting in increased weight loss, larger lung bacterial counts and decreased survival rates

growth/size/body
• adult mice exhibit a 10% to 15% reduction in body weight

hematopoietic system
• the number of granulocytes in the spleen and blood is decreased by at least 50% of wild-type
• however, granulocyte numbers within bone marrow are normal
• mice exhibit neutroprenia due to increased priming for apoptosis
• however, migration and adherence of neutrophils is normal
• the number of leukocytes other than neutrophils is increased in the bone marrow and spleen compared to in wild-type mice
• however, organomegaly is not observed
