immune system
• immature B cells in the bone marrow are reduced by 40% to 50%
• B220+ IgM+ IgD+ B cells in the spleen are reduced by 40%
• immunized mice have half the number of B cells in the spleen as immunized wild-type mice
• CD5+ B-1 B cells are greatly increased in the peritoneum
• CD5+ B-1 B cells outnumber CD5- B1-B cells in the peritoneum while the opposite occurs in wild-type mice
• there is about a 3-fold increase of B1-B cells in the spleen and bone marrow
• B cells have poor and delayed calcium mobilization in response to activation
• LPS induced B cell proliferation is decreased by 50% compared to controls
• BCR-mediated proliferation is 5-fold less than controls
• some IgM is detectable in the sera of unimmunized mice but these IgM molecules consist of monomer subunits and not the normal pentameric structure
• immunization with antigens leads to a small increase in sera IgM monomers but only to levels 10% that of controls
• these monomer IgM antibodies lack specificity to the antigen used in immunization
