• during hyperinsulinaemic clamp plasma glucose levels are elevated
• however, fasting glucose levels and metabolic glucose clearance are not significantly different from C57BL/6 controls
• insulin levels are more than doubled compared to C57BL/6 controls

• about an 80% increase in heart weight (normalized to body weight) compared to C57BL/6 controls
• cardiac hypertrophy not associated with elevation in mean arterial pressure
• 65% increase in left and right ventricular wall thickness
• marked ventricular interstitial fibrosis and fibroblast hyperplasia are seen
