integument
• by 2 weeks of age, sebaceous glands are only rarely found
• at 3 weeks of age, mice begin to exhibit a subtle hair loss which progresses to a consistent, moderate hair loss at 4 weeks of age which diminishes slightly in severity at 7 weeks of age
• from 7 weeks to 12 weeks of age, mice display progressive hair loss until there is severe hair loss by 12 weeks
• by 20 weeks, mice show nearly complete alopecia except for sparse fur on the rostrum and perineal areas
• by 3 weeks of age, most mutant follicles have an atrophic bulb and remain extended deep into the hypodemal fat layer
• at 7 days of age, mutants show ~2-fold increased dermal cellularity compared to littermates
• mutant dermis contains a diffuse, primarily mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate with occasional polymorphonuclear cells; this is restricted to the dermis
• at 7 days of age mutants display a 2-fold thickened epidermis compared to littermates
• mice display flaky skin at 3 weeks of age
• at 3 weeks affected mice have reddish skin
• the G1 males at 50 weeks of age showed moderate to severe excoriation and erosion of the scapular and suprascapular dermis
• at 3 weeks of age, mutants display variable skin thickening

immune system
• many mice have enlarged spleens
• lymph nodes generally have an activated appearance with prominent secondary follicles and large number of macrophages containing yellow-brown pigment
• the inguinal, axillary and occasionally mesenteric lymph nodes are dark grey with regions that appear necrotic
• superficial lymph nodes are enlarged at 3 weeks; mice 5 weeks old or more have multiple enlarged lymph nodes

hematopoietic system
• many mice have enlarged spleens
• spleens have a mild to moderate amount of extramedullary hematopoiesis with frequent granulocyte precursors present
• bone marrow in most mice is highly cellular compared to controls

endocrine/exocrine glands
• by 2 weeks of age, sebaceous glands are only rarely found

cellular
• the inguinal, axillary and occasionally mesenteric lymph nodes are dark grey with regions that appear necrotic

growth/size/body
• many mice have enlarged spleens
