abnormal cerebral cortex pyramidal cell morphology ( J:105706 )

• in 8 week old homozygotes primary visual cortex (V1) pyramidal neurons in layer II/III the number of mushroom and stubby shaped spines are reduced by 60% and 85%, respectively, the number of long, thin spines and filopodia are increased 2- to 3- fold and 22-fold, respectively, and the total density of protrusions is reduced by 24%

• the number of mushroom spines on V1 pyramidal neurons in layer II/III decreases by about 60% between 5 and 8 weeks of age

• however, the density and types of spines on homozygous CA1 pyramidal cells are similar to wild-type

abnormal miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents ( J:105706 )

• the amplitude and frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents in mutant pyramidal cells are significantly reduced with the median interval between events increased to 0.62 +/- 0.11 sec (compared to 0.19 +/- 0.09 sec in wild-type) and the median amplitudes decreased to 8.9 +/- 0.03 pA ( compared to 10.95 +/- 0.07 pA in wild-type)
