hematopoietic system
• the hypermutation characteristic of B and T cells is exaggerated in mutant cells during competitive reconstitution of homozygous Prkdcscid mice with mutant and wild-type cells
• homozygous mutant mice have 50% the number of CD4+ cells and 25% the number of CD8+ cells as do controls
• homozygous mutant mice have pan-lymphopenia
• peripheral B cell counts of homozygous mutants are reduced
• spleens of homozygous mutant mice contain three-fold fewer IgM+ IgD+ cells, CD21+ IgD+ cells, or B220+ CD19+ cells than do normal control spleens
• the peritoneal cavities of homozygous mutant mice contain significantly fewer IgM+ IgD- cells and somewhat fewer IgM+ IgD+ cells than do those of normal controls
• homozygous mutant mice have about four-fold fewer CD8+ cells and half as many CD4+ cells as do controls
• numbers of thymocytes at all stages of T cell maturation were diminished in homozygous mutant mice
