cellular
• exhibit an increase in the number of apoptotic cells in P6 follicles, however observe no differences in follicle density

integument
• exhibit an increase in the number of apoptotic cells in P6 follicles, however observe no differences in follicle density
• hairs are unusually short, except for guard hairs
• hair shafts are malformed, with hair lacking straight segments or organized kinks and instead, curling and bending randomly
• cuticle cells are poorly adherent to the shaft
• medullated hair shafts are sparse
• hairs are thin and display thickened knobby regions and thin spindly regions
• dermal papillae remain small and round rather than becoming long and thin
• the matrix progenitor cell population fails to expand, resulting in reduced numbers of matrix cells
• hair bulbs are smaller, with P6 bulbs the size of P2 bulbs, and fail to grow down to the bottom of the subuctis
• whiskers are bent erratically and are often pointed forward or outward
• reduced maintenance or supply of matrix progenitor cells results in impaired maturation of and shorter anagen followed by precocious entry into catagen
• follicles prematurely regress, with follicles entering catagen as early as P9 and reentering anagen by P12
• exhibit fewer proliferating cells in the hair bulb at P2, resulting in a reduced number of dividing cells at P6
