N normal phenotype
reproductive system
• growing ovarian follicles and oocytes are absent
• ovaries weight about 35% less than wild-type
• axial elements are formed and chromosomes align; however, synapses are not formed
• most spermatocytes arrest at the pachytene stage with increased apoptosis seen at pachynema and from 0-3% of spermatocytes reaching diplonema
• testes weigh about 70% less than wild-type

reproductive system
• synaptonemal complexes fail to form central elements
• more numerous and abnormal chiasma-like structures form with conjoined or fused axes
• diplotene cells exhibit non-centromeric ends of the homolog axes fused to form contiguous terminal loops
• centromere pairing is reduced compared to in wild-type cells sister-chromatid individualization is exaggerated compared to in wild-type cells
• centromeric termini are more fragile and fractured in appearance compared to in wild-type cells
